Sonic the Hedgehog Defies Expectations
After the controversy over last year’s character redesign for Sonic, we weren’t expecting much from the film. The trailers were corny, the direction was off to a rocky start and that design. Not to mention, video game movies aren’t typically received very well. However, we couldn’t help but see for ourselves how the film would turn out…
Despite the issues plaguing the movie from the start, we were very surprised Sonic the Hedgehog … wasn’t bad! Yep, it was charming and never took itself too seriously — something movies could learn from these days. I mean, how do you make a move about a blue hedgehog who runs super fast, collects special rings and is chased by a man named Dr. Robotnik, without being over-the-top? You don’t try!Â
Much like 2019’s Detective Pikachu, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie embraced its bizarre subject matter. It didn’t get bogged down trying to ground itself to reality.Â
What we’re left with is a funny, quirky buddy comedy. Yes, it follows many buddy comedy tropes, such as characters teaching each other life lessons and several scenes of shenanigans — but it works.
Ben Schwartz was great at voicing Sonic, although he got slightly annoying at times, and Jim Carrey is in his element as Dr. Robotnik. We loved the easter eggs scattered throughout the film, such as Green Hills, and the land of mushrooms — and the film does a great job world-building. In fact, fans will get excited when a certain species is seen within the first minutes of the film!
Overall
All-in-all, Sonic the Hedgehog is a fun, goofy and corny (in a good way) comedy with tons of modern references to bring about laughter. Fun for all ages!
