Shadow People are Real but What are They?
As you know, we’re fans of all things creepy here at King of the Chill. From horror movies to YouTube Channels that keep us up at night. However, this one is a true story that happened to me. This story still makes me wonder about what lurks in the dark. Before you write this off as a hoax, just know that this is an actual real phenomenon.
This is the story of …
The Shadow Man Who Watched Me As a Kid
They say kids and animals are more susceptible to the paranormal. They are more aware of “spirits” and energies that we cannot see, and often communicate with them as well. Normally, I’d ask for evidence, but since I saw this with my own eyes, I don’t need to.
When I was about 7 years old my family lived in a small house with a long hallway leading to the bedrooms. My older brother and I shared a room at the very end of the hall which faced straight down to the entrance. It wasn’t a particularly menacing hallway by any means, but once it came time to sleep, weird things would happen.
Every so often I’d wake up in the middle of the night, either for the restroom or to sneak a snack out the fridge. I don’t know when it started, but once in a while I would see a shadowy figure of a “man” standing at the end of the hall just staring at me.
It would be peaking around the doorway to the living room staring at the entrance of my bedroom. Right where I’d be standing. The image of it is still in my mind.
I wouldn’t freak out when I would see the shadow man, but I’d just stare back and know I should go back to bed. I’d be scared, don’t get me wrong, but I never brought it up to anyone other than my brother. It never felt like it meant me any harm.
This continued on for what feels like a couple of years, until one day I had to face my fear.
I woke up one particular night with a full bladder and hopped out of bed. As I approached the bedroom door, I peeked around the corner to see if my “friend” was there. Sure enough, he was there — almost mirroring my position on the other end of the hall.
I wanted to go back to bed but knew that I would probably have an accident if I did. I remember contemplating about how I would be able to get to the bathroom when there was a ghost standing there.
So I stuck my arms straight out in front of me, closed my eyes, and started walking toward the bathroom. Curious to see if he was still there as I approached the bathroom door, I slightly opened a single eye and peaked. He was still there and larger than before.
When I finally got to the bathroom, I figured if I made it that far then why not just walk the entire way to the living room and just see what happens. A brave thing for a kid to do, if I say so myself! I remembered how my parents would say it was all in my head, and I began to question it myself. There was only one way.
I kept my arms extended in front of me and went straight toward the shadow man. To my surprise, I walked straight through him! I was relieved to see the blinking light on our VCR in the living room, which meant that I was still alive. It also meant there was nothing physical blocking my path.
That was the last time I ever saw the shadow man.
The experience stayed repressed in my memory until recently. I never really talked about it until I learned online that it’s a common experience shared by many people. This got me to bring it up to my brother, who remembered exactly what I was talking about. One could argue that it was the invention of a child’s imagination, but this was no trick of the eyes. I still get chills when I think about it…
Who or What Are They?
There are many theories regarding what shadow people really are. Some say it’s a trick of the mind, and others say they are hallucinations experienced just before falling asleep.
Many people experience Sleep Paralysis, a scary phenomena that occurs just as your body enters sleep. If you haven’t experienced it … you’re lucky. When a person gets sleep paralysis, their entire body becomes numb. Although your mind is awake and you are fully aware of your surroundings, you have no control over your body.
It’s during this scary time that people claim to see frightening things. Some see people they know, who aren’t really there, and others see horrifying things such as the Old Hag, an old woman who laughs at you. Yes, that’s another thing we aren’t going to get into right now.
Another common experience during sleep paralysis is seeing shadow people. Could this really be your mind beginning to dream while you’re still awake? I guess we’ll never really know.
That’s my story — what do you think it was? Have you had any experiences with shadow people or sleep paralysis? Sound off in the comments!
