The wait is over. We were finally treated to the first trailer for the upcoming Shazam! movie from DC Entertainment. Speculation has been mixed due to DC’s not-so-great track record.
Leading up to the release of the trailer we were given a look at Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan Grazer in character as Captain Marvel (Shazam) and Freddy Freeman respectively. The tone seems to be light-hearted and less aggressive than other DC Movies, but we can agree that Shazam! is meant to be just that.
Here’s the trailer if you haven’t yet seen it:
From the looks of the trailer, the tone seems to be a mix between Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man. What I mean by that is that it seems to be more centered on the comedy and the youth aspect of the hero’s personality. If you didn’t already know, Shazam is basically a kid who transforms into the adult superhero after shouting the word, well…SHAZAM! So, it makes sense to have the character be quirky and modern (as we see when the character is doing the “Flossing” dance).
Zachary Levi seems to be the perfect guy to play Shazam!, but I’m finding it hard to imagine this film existing in the already established DC Universe.
The trailer seems to have all the tropes of a superhero origin movie with the power-testing and the “Oh look! I’m strong now!” scenarios.
As cool as his costume is and as true to the source material as it is, it does seem to be a bit corny. It looks good, but again, I can’t see it existing within the same universe as Batman or Superman.
The mystical aspect of Shazam’s origin is a little bit easier to swallow as we have already seen Enchantress and Diablo in Suicide Squad, although they weren’t exactly a perfect fit in the universe either.
I’m still interested in seeing where Shazam! is heading and hopefully it’ll be a turning point for DC Entertainment. What are your thoughts so far?
