The Most competitive you’ll be all year without leaving the couch
A few days ago, Nintendo released a demo for their upcoming game Mario Tennis Aces for the Nintendo Switch. The demo, aside from challenging the computer, allows you to join an online tournament to test your skills in Mario Tennis. Here’s what we think so far.
The gameplay on the Nintendo Switch is very smooth and as usual, the characters and graphics are great! Nintendo always knows how to incorporate their controllers to allow comfortable game controls. The Switch Joy-Cons are no different.
For the first time in Mario Tennis, a feature called “Trick Shots” is now available. This allows your character to save a ball that is on the other side of the court by using a trick shot where they do a backflip, or in Waluigi’s case, a moonwalk, in order to catch the ball before it goes out. This also serves as a way to pump up the crowd if done correctly.
This is done by using one of two methods: The first is to double tap the ‘x’ button and tilt your Joy-Con joystick in the direction of the ball you’re trying to save. The other way is to just tilt the right-side joystick in the direction of the ball. After doing so, the character will perform their trick shot and save the ball.
This doesn’t always work because matches can get so intense that you accidentally tilt the joystick in the other direction or you may react late and not get there in time.
Another cool feature is the use of ‘energy’ that is built up while charging your shot while waiting for the rally to come your way. Once you are fully charged, you can do Special Shot where you can either hit a powerful shot that your opponent cant reach, or hit it directly at your opponent to get a cool body shot. However, your opponent has the opportunity to block the shot if they are swift enough to swing at the moment of impact. If they miss the block, their tennis racket will break.
Speaking of breaking your racket, each game starts you off with two tennis rackets. If you break both rackets, you will lose the match by KO.
The demo offers an online option where you can test your skills against other Switch players. Online games can get very intense but they are very fun. Each match will earn you points just like in Mario Kart 8. The demo allows you to earn unlockable characters after you meet certain point thresholds.
The online tournament works like any other branch tournament. If you make it to the final round, which is very difficult, you will earn a trophy.
Players of the Mario Tennis Ace Demo will earn a special Classic Mario Tennis costume to use when the full game releases on June 22, 2018.
Mario Tennis Aces for the Nintendo Switch is shaping up to be one of the most fun games yet for the console. The controls are smooth and the gameplay is great. If you haven’t downloaded the demo yet, I highly recommend it.
I will be working on my drop shot to be ready for the full game.
