Jake Gyllenhaal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
It was recently announced that actor Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel as the villain Mysterio. We thought it’d be fun to take a look at who the mysterious villain is and what it would mean for the MCU.
Who is Mysterio?
As you probably have guessed, these types of questions aren’t as easy as they seem to answer. Like many comic book characters, more than one person has taken up the mantle of being the villain Mysterio.
There are three main identities to Mysterio, each as campy as the last. The first to put on the mask (or dome?) was a man named Quentin Beck.
Quentin Beck was a movie actor who had an affection for illusions. Yes, like Criss Angel type of illusions (*whispers* Mind Freak). Long story short, Beck was passed on to star in a movie and the rejection turned him evil. You know how rejection goes.
Quentin decided to come up with the most rational plan he could think of to prove his worth as an actor/magician. He would take on the guise of the vigilante, Mysterio, and vowed to capture Spider-Man, who he framed for a robbery. Because Spider-Man was sort of frowned upon like Batman, people wanted him captured for some reason- mostly Jameson, the moustache-having boss at The Daily Bugle. He succeeded to outsmart Spidey with his illusions, but Spider-Man was conveniently able to prove that Mysterio framed him.
That’s pretty much the extent of his relationship with Spider-Man, though he returned later on full of cancer and decided to pick on Daredevil for some reason before killing himself. But that’s another story.
Mysterio returned again as a man named Daniel Berkhart who has a throwaway storyline. It’s not very interesting so here’s the bulk of it:
Berkhart is hired by Jonah Jameson of The Daily Bugle to capture Spider-Man again because everyone makes rational decisions in the comic book world. Berkhard, who had supposedly worked with Quentin Beck on movie sets, was to use the Mysterio suit to appear as Beck’s “ghost”. Needless to say, this didn’t work out and the story ends up with Berkhart trying to blackmail Jameson for being behind the acts.
Finally, and probably most interestingly, a man named Francis Klum put on the Mysterio suit. Klum is a telekinetic mutant with a tragic backstory involving abuse and being forced to use his power to help his older brother commit horrible crimes.
During an altercation that involved Black Cat, Spider-Man attacked Klum, but he was able to escape using his powers. He ended up wanting revenge against Spider-Man and Black Cat so he did the rational thing and bought the Mysterio suit and used his powers to convince them that he had returned from the dead.
Which Mysterio will be in Far From Home?
Personally, I believe that Francis Klum’s Mysterio would be best suited for a well-rounded story to see on screen. Plus, now that Marvel has acquired 20th Century Fox, they will be able to explain his mutant-hood. If not, they can always say he’s an “Inhuman” or something.
The other two Mysterios are too campy unless they rewrite their stories, which we’ve seen them do with other characters.
Needless to say, Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor and it would be very cool to see him introduced into the MCU. It would also be amazing to have Black Cat introduced in the same movie! I can dream.
If Marvel decides to go the route of Mysterio, I’m predicting that we will get a psychedelic, suspense thriller with a plot twist. After all, Mysterio is a master of illusions.
