Guys may not carry purses, but we still need things to keep with us all the time. They usually end up in our pockets, satchels, or backpacks. If you don’t carry a set group of items everyday, we’re here to help. These things vary in purpose, but will ultimately make your life a tad bit easier somewhere down the line. The bonus is that it makes you look like you have your life together! So here are 9 things every guy should own.
Having a good wallet is a no-brainer. In today’s everyday life, less is more. We don’t live in the times of our dad’s fat leather wallet anymore. We want simple, and efficient. Card holders are in trend lately and they are very comfortable in your pocket. Plus, they aren’t as expensive as a full-size billfold.
I’ve been a diehard Fossil guy since I was a teenager because they always offer quality, simple products. You can’t get anymore simpler than the Fossil Men’s Omega Card Holder. It looks cool, and it’s only $22 on Amazon!
Carrying a handkerchief is a bit old fashioned but it does make sense to carry one with you. You can find a basic handkerchief for a dime a dozen, but chances are that you want something that is durable and will last a long time. There are plenty of quality handkerchief makers out there producing some high quality products right here in the USA. You’ll definitely notice a difference between a 100% cotton handkerchief and a thin polyester one that you can find at any liquor store. A good example is Godspeed Tactical, who produces a number of well made handkerchiefs. The only thing is they only make so many of a certain style, making them very limited.
If you’re looking for more of a basic handkerchief, then you can get a 100% cotton 4-Pack from Amazon.
You never know when you may need something to wipe your hands on or clean something up with. Plus they fit nice and easy in your back pocket waiting for you whenever you need it.
If you carry a lot of keys on your key chain or just like a more minimalist style, then the KeyBar is for you. KeyBar holds all of your loose keys in a simple doohickey that keeps them from dangling and making tons of noise. There are a bunch of different variations and attachments but the one I use most is the USB attachment.
I stand behind KeyBar because they did something so simple and obvious, but made it big.
If you’re over the age of 25 and don’t wear a watch, you may want to reconsider your life choices. Yes, I understand you can just look at the time on your phone, but a watch is more than that. A watch can tie together your outfit nicely. It can be that extra accessory that let’s others know that you put a little extra effort in your appearance.
There are tons of nice and inexpensive watches out there such as a G-Shock or a classic Casio. If you want to go for a higher end look then go with the Apple Watch or any Fossil Watch. You can’t go wrong with a simple Fossil Leather Band Watch.
Sunglasses automatically make you look cooler. It’s science. They’re probably the easiest way to dress up your casual going out look. Of course the most popular choice for a quality pair of sunglasses is the Ray Ban Wayfarers. They go with everything and they come in a bunch of different variations. However, if you want to stand out from the rest, then go with the Ray Ban Clubmasters. They are classy and give you an extra dose of cool.
6. Small Knife
Hear me out. Owning a knife isn’t as scary as it seems. Just because you own a knife doesn’t mean you’re dangerous. Sometimes you just need one on hand in case of a self-defense emergency, or little things like opening boxes or cutting open packaging. Knives are on the rise in common trendiness.
Like everything else, the simpler the better. If you’re feeling baller and want to splurge on a cool everyday carry, go with an Emerson Knife. Emersons are made in the USA and will last a lifetime. My choice for a cool and simple everyday carry is the Emerson Mini CQC-7BW. It looks like a little samurai sword and it fits nicely in your pocket without being too noticeable.
Now, knives aren’t cheap and if they are, they’re probably not of great quality. However, if you’re on a budget and don’t have $100+ to spend on a knife, then you’re in luck. Emerson partnered with Kershaw Knives, a very well known and respected name in cutlery, and allowed them to use their designs and make them available at a smaller cost.
I know, everyone has to have shoes. I’m talking about a good pair of shoes that you can wear out to the bar, or just to the grocery store. There are tons of shoe options out there but you want a pair that’ll last you a good while. My absolute favorite pair of throw-around shoes are my Doc Marten’s Maleke Ankle Boots in brown. They look cool and you can wear them when you’re trying to dress up, or even when you’re just bummin’ it on the weekends. My favorite part about them is they look even cooler when they’re all scuffed up. Some shoes just look better when they’re worn in.
Another good pair of shoes that are inexpensive and mentioned in my Trendiest Shoes post is the Converse Jack Purcells. They’re simple, stylish and you’ll stand apart from everyone else who are wearing Chucks instead.

8. Credit Card Protection
As we get more technologically advanced in the world, it’s becoming easier for our information to be stolen. I highly recommend getting yourself a card protection sleeve for your credit and debit cards to protect your data from being stolen. You never know when it will hit you, and you’ll wish you took the time to protect yourself. It never hurts to be proactive.
A simple and straight forward choice is the RFID Blocking Sleeve by Boxili. They’re inexpensive, come in a multi-pack, and get the job done.
I started carrying a small notebook everywhere with me when I saw an interview with Larry David saying how he always carries a small journal just in case something funny pops in his mind. I use that same concept when trying to think of things to write about, or just stuff that would be funny to Tweet out.
I carry a Moleskin pocket journal with a hardback, but you can find simple Field Notes or Cahier notebooks just about anywhere.
There it is. Men, if you want to start getting your life together then it would be smart to invest in at least one of these items.
10. Blood Pressure Checker
Because you can never bee TOO careful! We all get to that point sooner or later, so you may as well start taking care of yourself now.
