They’re Both Great, But What’s Better?
So, you’re looking to get into the Bluetooth headphone game but you’re unsure of which to get, but you definitely know you don’t want AirPods. If you’re a fan of Beats Headphones, you’re in luck! They offer a couple different options for simple, wireless earbuds- The PowerBeats and the BeatsX. But what makes one better than the other?
Oh, and if you are interested in AirPods but are unsure about the cost, check out my review of them here.
Anyway, let’s take a look at Beats’ offerings…
PowerBeats are great if you’re going to be wearing them while you sweat away at the gym. Unlike the BeatsX, they have ear hooks that go around the back of your ears so they stay in place during times of a lot of movement. They’re also sweat-resistant, so if you’re wearing earbuds during the gym or on a run, then look no further.
The Powerbeats 3 come with four different silicone earbud pieces that you can swap out if you’re someone with unique ears, or just prefer a certain fit. They’re offered in a variety of colors and come with a small carrying pouch.
Like most wireless headphones, you’re able to pick up calls and access Siri with the cord controls. If you’re an iPhone user, then your experience with the newer Beats products will be much more worthwhile. The PowerBeats 3 feature Apple’s W1 Chip allowing for a quick and easy pairing. All you have to do is turn the headphones on and a window will pop up on your phone asking you if you want to pair them to your phone and with one touch, that’s it!
One thing that concerned me about them is that the cord feels a bit fragile and thin but other than that, the build is pretty solid. Keep in mind that these are intended to be used during rigorous activity like going to the gym or something that’ll make you sweat.
The BeatsX Earbuds are great for casual listening and travel. The cord is much longer and is designed to have a stronger support thanks to the neck rest. Unlike the Powerbeats 3, these are just earbuds with no ear hooks, which makes them more minimalist and easier to look at. I love the way the thicker part of the cord sits on your neck and allows the thinner part of the cord to hang under the actual earbuds without weighing them down and pulling them out of your ears.
At first it may seem awkward, but once you wear them you’ll realize why they look the way they do. Another nifty feature is the magnetic backings of the earbuds. When they’re not in your ear, they fall down and snap together to create a “necklace” so that they won’t slide off your neck at any point.
Like the Powerbeats, the BeatsX come with different silicone earbud pieces for a fit that’s right for you. If you’re worried about the lack of support that the Powerbeats has with the ear hooks, don’t worry. They come with optional adapters that fit around the earbuds and then sit in your ear so that you can effectively lock them in more securely.
The BeatsX have a shorter battery life, however, with 8-hours compared to the Powerbeats‘ 12-hours. Let’s be honest though, no one is listening to music or has their headphones on for more than 8 hours at a time. Plus, with the fast-charge feature, you only need to plug it in for like thirty minutes for a full charge, just like the Powerbeats 3.
Both of Beats’ Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds are solid choices for anyone, but depending on how you use yours, one may be better than the other.
I recommend the Powerbeats 3 for those who will mostly be using them while being active such as going to the gym or going on a run. The ear hooks will keep them secure and you won’t have to worry about about sweat due to its resistance. Plus the 12-hour battery life is great!
The BeatsX are a great choice for casual listeners who won’t be using them with high amounts of physical activity, but they’ll still be okay if you do (Just try not to sweat too much!). The cord is far better than the Powerbeats 3 due to the support of the neck rest and the earbud adapters are always there if you’re looking for a more secure fit like with the PowerBeats 3.
If you’re an iPhone user, you’ll be happy regardless of which one you choose due to the Apple W1 Chip that allows for a super fast pairing. One of the best parts of both is the fast-charging capabilities. A five minute charge will give you about 1-2 hours of listening time and a full charge with only a half hour plugged in.
Personally, I went with the BeatsX because the slimmer look and the smaller earbuds are more my style. I use the earbud adapters for a more secure fit and the extra earbud options came in handy immediately when I needed a more snug fit.
I believe the BeatsX have a much crisper sound than the Powerbeats 3, and they also come at a better price! If you’re wondering, I got them in the light grey color option for a sleek minimalist look but they come in plenty of colors choices. Check out the video below for some more insight…
Hopefully we somehow helped your decision-making process a little bit easier by comparing the two. You can also see my comparison of the BeatsX and the Apple AirPods here
