The year is 1996 and a group of friends heading into high school are determined to make their mark. The nostalgia will hit you HARD with each and every episode of “Everything Sucks!”, Netflix’s new Original Series. The soundtrack, which includes Nirvana, Oasis and Alanis Morisette, will make you long for the days of VHS tapes, Blockbuster and life before cell phones.
Sound familiar? Well, that’s because “Everything Sucks!” is basically Netflix’s version of another iconic 90’s TV Show- Freaks & Geeks. I mean that in the best way possible too! They aren’t shy about the 90’s references either, which seem a bit forced at times.
“Everything Sucks!” follows Lucas, a determined freshman who has a passion for filmmaking. He is the son of a single mom who is trying to maintain the close relationship she has with her son. The entire first season focuses on Lucas’ attempt to make a student film, in the town of Boring, Oregon, with the help of his friends and classmates, during which, he falls in love with the principal’s daughter. The kicker? She thinks she might be a lesbian.
“Everything Sucks!” is funny, touching and the way each character is fleshed out makes for a promising start to a great series. It’s also very refreshing to see high school students portrayed by kids who look like, well, high school students. This is definitely worth a watch, 90’s kid or not!
