If you’ve watched TV or been on the internet at all in the last few days then you’ve definitely been bombarded with the headline, “Is Oprah Running For President?” If not, then let me give a quick rundown.
During the 2018 Golden Globes, Oprah Winfrey was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. It was during this presentation that Oprah gave a beautiful, inspirational speech that touched on her personal life, shed light on the recent accusations of sexual assault in Hollywood as well as the injustices in the entertainment industry.
It really was a beautiful and very well executed speech. You can see it in its entirety here.
After the Golden Globes wrapped up, people were so inspired by the speech that they were calling for Oprah to run for president of the United States in 2020 against Donald Trump. What more, is that three days later, people are shopping around the idea of Oprah’s running mate being none other than America’s Dad, Tom Hanks!
As fun as the thought is to have these great people be leading this country, it poses an issue for who we are as a country. Personally, I love both Hanks and Winfrey but I don’t see the logic in either of them running for office. At least Donald Trump was a very politicized businessman with experience in foreign affairs.
You say that Oprah is also a businesswoman? That’s right! A great one too! However, Winfrey’s business is far different and if we’re being honest with ourselves, we wouldn’t want to run for the most stressful and criticized job on the planet if we were already filthy rich and universally adored by almost everyone.
It’s a pretty thought to have two pure souls running for the top positions in American Government, but it makes little sense. Being a nice person doesn’t mean you’ll be good at the job.
Sometimes having good intentions just aren’t enough and I think a lot of the population thinks with their emotions first. As admirable as that is, it just isn’t realistic in today’s world. Sadly, we have to actually get things done and no matter who gets the job of president, there will be unhappy people.
What are your thoughts on the notion of an Oprah Winfrey candidacy for President and why? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
