A couple of weeks ago I purchased the new iPhone 8 Plus and while setting it up, I got impatient and didn’t back up my apps or information. This left me trying to remember what apps were necessary for me and struggling not to forget the important ones. As I was scrolling through the App Store’s Top Games, I came across Pocket Mortys. I downloaded it ONLY because of the fact that I had just gotten into the show (I’m late, I know), and wanted something to do to pass the time between new episodes. I’m glad I did.
Unless you had a poor childhood or grew up in North Korea for some reason, you have played or at least heard of Pokemon. Pocket Mortys is a spoof off of the original games for the Game Boy. In Pocket Mortys, you follow Rick and Morty in a fun, cute and intriguing adventure to collect all the different types of Mortys from other universes. If you’ve ever seen an episode of Rick and Morty, you know that alternate realities is a common theme. Sometimes these are Mortys that we have seen in episodes of the show, and some are funny, never before seen versions. When you think about it, there are countless types of Morty possibilities! I find myself cracking up overtime I encounter a new Morty and getting excited every time I use a ‘Blips and Chitz’ coupon to win a new Morty.
Speaking of which, the game developers at Adult Swim have most likely earned a huge payday with Pocket Mortys. They give you the option to purchase a coupon that you can use at the ‘Blips and Chitz’ vending machines in the game. Each ticket costs 99cents and you can use that coupon to get a few useful items and one random Morty. Now, you don’t have to purchase coupons. They are winnable through various quests in the game but if you are anything like me, you will have so much fun discovering all the different types of Mortys that you will be more than happy to spend the dollar. I’m sure most players are the same way.
The battle system is generally the same turn-based combat as most Pokemon games. Instead of tons of different types of attributes, there are only 3. Rock, Paper and Scissors. We all know who is weak to who in this case. I’ll warn you, since we will all be new to this game at first, you won’t know which Morty is what type until they’re out in battle. This leaves you guessing whether or not you need to switch your Morty out in between battles. One challenging thing that I have found is that you run out of Attack Points, or AP, really fast and are pretty much forced to ‘Black Out’ due to lack of money and/or Serums (Potions). Oh, and I should probably warn you, once you step through the portal in the city to be transported to another universe, you’re there until you black out, or you win the gym battle. Trust me, you will black out more often than not.
Pro Tip: I find that just by looking at a certain Morty, you can sometimes tell what attribute they’ll have. For example: Greaser Morty is a Rock Type and Old Morty is Paper. There’s a similar trend when encountering the many versions of Morty.
The goal of the whole game is to collect the gym badges from the different universes’ versions of Rick. They will give you a badge and you collect the badges in order to earn the privilege to battle a member of the Council of Ricks. Similar to the Elite Four. The further you go, the more badges you’ll have to collect to battle the next Council Member. In case you were wondering, the reason you’re going through this adventure to begin with is that the Council of Ricks have confiscated your portal gun and you need to get it back from them
The game adds a few of their own original ideas such as combining items to create better gear and combining Mortys to get a stronger one. This is useful when you have a lot of duplicate items/Mortys. You will quickly learn that leveling up is challenging and can be made easier by sending your Morty to Bootcamp at the Daycare, which is basically like the Pokemon Daycare. It’s important to note that you are only allowed 5 Mortys in your party, one of them being the original Morty whom you cannot take out, so choose your team wisely!
A great way to earn more Schmeckles, the game’s currency, is to visit Investment Rick and have him invest a certain amount of your Schmeckles to give you a larger return after a certain amount of time. This is the easiest, most convenient way to gather money as you will find out right away that earning money is probably the biggest frustration you’ll come across.
Pro Tip: Take advantage of all three investment options. You’ll be glad you did in the long run. After a few days you won’t have to worry about money anymore.
The most enjoyable thing that Pocket Mortys has to offer is the many callbacks to the show. You will come across and work with many familiar characters along the way. It’s fun to see favorites like Birdperson outside of the show and lending you a hand when you black out in battle. Jerry is also on his own adventure and you will run into him every so often for battles.
The game itself looks great and is as simple as it gets. The character art is hilarious and I find myself amazed at the amount of detail the developers have put into it. I recommend playing Pocket Mortys on a larger device like a tablet or iPhone 7/8 Plus or one of the larger Galaxy phones. A smaller device just won’t do it justice. The colors pop and the soundtrack features some familiar tunes from the show. If you enjoyed any of the Pokemon games or Rick and Morty in general, you’ll love this game. It’s a great way to pass time and to use your overpriced iPhone!
I’m not nearly finished with the game nor have I seen all of the Morty types but I hope the huge amount of Mortys will keep me intrigued long enough to play the whole game through.
